An opinion paper, produced on behalf of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists by Prof George Lewith and colleagues, indicates that acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine may be beneficial to women with chronic pelvic pain (CPP) associated with dysmenorrhea, endometriosis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). However, Lewith et al call for more rigorous investigation in this area, as their review could only consider ‘preliminary evidence’. They conclude with ‘We support well-designed research into CAM therapies for this problematic condition’.
