Jonathan practiced as a fitness instructor and massage therapist from 1993 before qualifying as a physiotherapist in 1999 and achieving an MSc in acupuncture in 2004. He began practising acupuncture in 2000 and has been a member of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP) board of directors since 2013. Until 2014 he ran an integrated therapy clinic, incorporating physiotherapy, acupuncture, sports therapy, massage and beauty therapy.

Jonathan has lectured within higher education since 2002 and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He is currently the external examiner for Glyndŵr University (Complementary Therapies BSc and Acupuncture BSc) and a visiting lecturer to Keele University School of Medicine. Previously, Jonathan was award leader for the Clinical Biomechanics MSc at Staffordshire University, has lectured at the University of Derby (Holistic Therapy BSc) and developed the Sports Rehabilitation BSc at Newman University.

Since 2010 Jonathan has consulted on the development and delivery of training courses to sports therapists and personal trainers in cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, low back pain and mental health. He has developed a number of accredited training courses for therapists, including dry needling and cosmetic acupuncture. He also continues to support and mentor other FHT members in their personal development and the development of training courses.
